Plastic World

My scuba diver.

I've been working hard on getting my solo show ready. It's a huge project, an installation of four different life size environments. Sea, Mountain, Rain Forest and Desert. Life size. I'm stressed.

The show opens Friday night and I'm making it completely out of recycled materials. The neighbors must think I'm nuts. Instead of taking out the trash I'm bringing it in. So far I've been cutting tin, melting plastic, tearing blue jeans and wrapping people in plastic, just to mention a few things.

There have been a lot of unseen consequences, I've been burned, cut, bruised and I wake up every morning with my hands swollen. At this point they're staying swollen all day, but I thought that might happen. What I didn't see was how aware I would become of the environment. It's ironic.

I wanted to make people more aware of what all this trash was doing to us, and hopefully someone will get it. I now see the reality of the problem. This process has made me pay attention. In my bathroom alone are plastic hairbrush handles, combs, deodorant containers, cream bottles, shampoo and conditioner bottles, tooth brushes, the water pick, toilet brush, scrubby, hair jell container, rubbing alcohol bottle, witch hazel bottle, hair detangler bottle,
hairspray bottle, razors, hair clips, hair pins, headbands, make-up containers... okay, I won't keep going, but trust me, there's lots more. And NONE of it will biodegrade.

The problem is overwhelming. Recycling won't do it. It won't make even the smallest dent in the problem. We have to stop using plastic. Period.

Strange Things

Can you see the shirt in this picture?

I've been working on the gallery. Covering the ceiling with fabric, reorganizing the small storage room and adding shelves. I'm tired now. Every part of me hurts. Could I be getting old? Naw...

Cozies gone wild.

Tonight is sewing circle and I have knitting on the brain.

What size are those needles?

This morning I meet the rest of the people at the new job. I really wish it would thaw here so I could ride my bike there.

Knitters with tattoos. Go figure.

Edwin is still horribly sick and his show starts this weekend! Yucky!

The Gallery

Another day at the gallery. I've been putting up a new ceiling and it's slow going. I still wish I could find a rich art patron that would be happy to pay the rent for us starving artists. Ha! I do love the gallery though. I would hate to give it up. It's so much fun to see them have their shows and sell their art. It feels good to do something that helps people. Something that makes them feel good about themselves.

The group is so wonderful. They all support each other and help with the gallery. I can't believe how lucky I am to get such a good group of people together. This really does feel like what I should be doing. Like it should be my life's work. I wish it was easier to support financially. I would hate to give it up, but every month is touch and go. It really has been worth the financial strain.

I want... I want... I want.... I hope....

Yeah... Uh Huh...

It's cold here. I'm so sick of the cold. I'm ready for summer. Ready to feel the warm sun on my face. Ready to sunburn.

I'm feeling very anti-social these days. Maybe it's winter, maybe it's stress, but whatever it is, I just want a vacation from it. It will pass, I know. It always does. In the mean time, I'm annoying people by ignoring them.

Check out this blog.

Edwin is considering doing plays in Maine again this summer. I think he should, it's good for him to keep busy and working, but all the same I'll miss him if he goes. I won't be able to afford a visit, (unless I win the lottery, yeah... ah huh) and if I actually get this job I'm interviewing for on Monday, I won't have the time off anyway. Let's hope they like blond and black hair.

German Harry

Edwin and I went to see the play "Fishtank" tonight. It was fun but... not exactly exciting. They did have fun though!

I've been having a lot more fun listening to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in GERMAN! Edwin got it for me, and it's a gas listening to the voices the narrator does.

It's time for me to start working on the wearable art show. I have some ideas, but we'll see if they work.

And yes... it's still cold!

Hair and Sewing

Francene took me to her hair stylist for my birthday to get my hair done. It's blond and black with a little caramel between the layers. I love it!

Some pictures from this weeks sewing circle. This is Jane. Jane brought homemade Valentine's day cookies. Yummy!

This is Francene. She's working on a project she had stowed in a box for years. She figured coming to sewing circle would make her get it done.

This is another Jane. They live across the street from each other and are the core of sewing circle. We love the Janes!

This is Mary. She's always working on quilts. This one is reversible.

The other side.

The tree is decorated with Valentine's hearts. We decided to keep it up and decorate it for every month. Shamrocks next!

Make Feet Happy

"I've been rich and I've been poor -- and believe me, rich is better."
Sophie Tucker

I've got to say, this quote is so true. Yeah, I know. Duh. So well, more financial woes. More work. More time spent trying to make cash.

At least tonight is sewing circle, and the ladies are always fun. It's a great stress reliever. Maybe I'll make myself a new pair of slippers tonight. The duct tape just isn't working. Well, it works, it just doesn't breathe, and that's a bad thing for your feet... and anyone near you.

Blogging is free, thank god.

Birthday!

Well. Christina Baldwin, Barbara June Patterson

Edwin's play, "Well" just ended, and now he's working on "The Giver."

I'm working on getting my stuff up on the web as much as possible. Trying to make as much money as possible. It's my obsession. Money. It's really too bad that art and theater are not considered by most to be "real work" and worthy of "real pay." I don't know about other artists ( I suspect it's the same) but I tend to work much more than a 8 hour day, or a 40 hour week. *Sigh* Yup, whining again. I keep thinking that there must be a way to make more money without losing my mind to cubes and fluorescent lighting.

Today is my birthday, so I'm trying to figure out what I want to do today. Edwin says, anything I want, but what do I want? :-)

Watch the whole thing. It's worth it.

Sorry, you’re too fat to eat here

It was only a matter of time. The only question is, what will be the next right we lose? And the next, and the next...

"Sorry, you’re too fat to eat here
updated 3:00 p.m. CT, Mon., Feb. 4, 2008
JACKSON, Miss. - A state lawmaker wants to ban restaurants from serving food to obese customers — but please, don’t be offended.

He says he never even expected his plan to become law.

“I was trying to shed a little light on the number one problem in Mississippi,” said Republican Rep. John Read of Gautier, who acknowledges that at 5-foot-11 and 230 pounds, he’d probably have a tough time under his own bill.

More than 30 percent of adults in Mississippi are considered it obese, according to a 2007 study by the Trust for America’s Health, a research group that focuses on disease prevention.

The state House Public Health Committee chairman, Democrat Steve Holland of Plantersville, said he is going to “shred” the bill.

“It is too oppressive for government to require a restaurant owner to police another human being from their own indiscretions,” Holland said Monday.

The bill had no specifics about how obesity would be defined, or how restaurants were supposed to determine if a customer was obese.

Al Stamps, who owns a restaurant in Jackson, said it is “absurd” for the state to consider telling him which customers he can’t serve. He and his wife, Kim, do a bustling lunch business at Cool Al’s, which serves big burgers — beef or veggie — and specialty foods like “Sassy Momma Sweet Potato Fries.”

“There is a better way to deal with health issues than to impose those kind of regulations,” Al Stamps said. “I’m sorry — you can’t do it by treating adults like children and telling them what they can and cannot eat.”"

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

"Before the Devil Knows You're Dead."

Edwin and I saw, a few days ago, the movie "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead." It was a really good movie, but I warn you, the anxiety level is high! By the time the movie was over I was extremely agitated. It stays with you. But really, it is one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

I've finally revamped my cafepress site. It took me forever to figure out how to do it right. Hopefully I'll make sales! While working on it I made my way though the "Journeyman" TV Show on NBC. I liked it much better than "Bionic Woman." I think I've run out of TV shows to watch on the net. Yeah, I know. Way too much TV, but don't worry, I've also been making my way though Neil Gaiman's novels. I love his stuff and Edwin supplied me with all his books for Christmas. Fun!

Art and the Bionic Woman

"ART" Bob Malos, Bruce Hyde, Ari Hoptman

I went to se "Art" on Sunday. It was a wonderful play about three men you would never want to be friends with. :-) Bob was amazing as usual, not to mention, funny!

I'm redesigning the SMB Gallery website, because the "free, easy" site designs the host provides doesn't really work. So I'm keeping it simple and hopefully (cross your fingers) it will work on all browsers.

I've discovered watching TV series on the internet. I know... sometimes it takes me a while to catch on. While I work on the computer I keep a little window open to watch shows. Right now I'm making my way through the "Bionic Woman." I wish it was better...

Love, Lust and Romance

I'm starting a blog again. Wish me luck. Today I'm just going to show some pictures from the last gallery show, "Love Lust and Romance." Guess which word I decided to focus on. Some of these you've probably seen before if you've read the old blog.
